Qualified Historian
Qualified historians should have six qualifications: researcher spirit, foreign languages, neutrality, rhetoric, good listening, good writing and taking themselves back in time. Qualified historians have to have researcher spirit because historians with this feature always want to learn new information. Learning new information is very important for history. Qualified historians have to learn something new all the time. Next qualification is rhetoric. Rhetoric is very important because when you speak you have to influence and convince other people when you talk. If your talking is bad, other people won’t want to listen to you. So qualified historians’ pronunciation has to be perfect. Next qualification is foreign languages. Today, of course, qualified historians have to have minimum two languages. One is no doubt English. The others may vary depending on the area you want to specialize. This may be Arabic, German, Italian, Persian, French, Chinese etc. If you want to come to a place in you career you have to speak at least three languages like your mother tongue. The most famous Turkish historian Halil Inalcık always used to say this: ''Whoever doesn’t know French and Italian can’t be a real historian.'' This opinion may vary from person to person. Other qualification is good listening and writing. They are important skills for history. Especially in foreign languages. Qualified historians have to have good listening and academic writing skills. They must understand everything that is said. Next qualification is neutrality. A qualified historian must be absolutely objective. Otherwise you can’t be a real historian. The biggest problem of modern-day historians is objectivity. Qualified historians must analyze events objectively. The last qualification is taking oneself back in time. This is the most important qualification and a must for a historian. If a historian can’t take him/herself back in time that historian isn’t a real historian. To sum up, qualified historians have to have researcher spirit, rhetoric, foreign languages, neutrality, good listening and writing and taking themselves back in time.
